If you live in San Jose and you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants at Fremont Star Dental give you a fixed replacement that looks and works like a natural tooth. Dr. Uma Patel, DDS, plans the treatment, places the implant and fits the final crown in our own office, so your care stays in one place from the first scan to the last visit.
If you are weighing the drive from San Jose, this page walks through what the treatment involves, who it suits, how insurance and financing work, and what getting here looks like.
Dental Implants San Jose Patients Can Plan and Finish in One Office
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over the following months the bone grows around it and holds it firmly in place. Once it has healed, an abutment and a custom crown are attached, and that crown is the part you see and chew with.
According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, dental implants have been used for half a century and are safe and effective, and well placed, well cared for implants have the potential to last for decades. It is an established treatment, not an experimental one.
At Fremont Star Dental, Dr. Patel has more than 20 years of experience, and our team has placed over 15,000 implants. Because the surgery and the restoration happen under one roof, nobody has to hand your case to someone else halfway through.
We also take care of the work that sometimes comes before an implant. That includes tooth extraction, bone grafting and a sinus lift when your jaw needs extra support.
Implant Options: One Tooth, Several Teeth or a Full Arch
Not every gap is the same, so the treatment is not the same either. Here are the options we offer.
- Single tooth implant. One implant and one crown replace one missing tooth without touching the teeth beside it. You can read more about the single tooth implant process on its own page.
- Implants for multiple missing teeth. Two or three implants can support a bridge across a larger gap, which means fewer implants than teeth. See how multiple missing teeth are handled.
- Full mouth implants and All-on-4. When most or all of the teeth in an arch are gone, a full arch can be supported by as few as four implants.
- Mini implants. These are narrower posts, sometimes suggested when there is limited bone density or space.
- Implant supported dentures. If you already wear dentures that slip, implants can anchor them.
Dr. Patel will tell you which of these fits your mouth after an exam and a scan. Sometimes the answer is simpler than people expect, and sometimes it is not.
How 3D Imaging Makes Implant Planning More Precise
Implant placement comes down to millimeters. The jawbone has nerves, sinuses and neighboring roots that a placement has to respect, and a flat picture only shows so much.
That is why we use 3D cone beam imaging. A single scan shows your teeth, bone, nerves and soft tissue in three dimensions, so Dr. Patel can measure the bone you have, choose the implant size and decide where it should sit before surgery starts. We also use computer guided surgery, which carries that plan into the procedure itself.
For you, that mostly means fewer surprises on the day and a clearer conversation at the consultation, because you can see your own scan while we talk through it.
Do You Need a Bone Graft or Sinus Lift First?
Sometimes, yes. An implant needs enough healthy bone to anchor into. If a tooth has been missing for a long time, the bone in that spot can thin out, and in the upper back jaw the sinus can sit close to where the implant would go.
A bone graft adds support to the area. A sinus lift creates room in the upper jaw. Both are done to give the implant something solid to hold, and both add healing time before the implant itself goes in. We do not recommend them by default. The 3D scan tells us whether you need either one, and we will show you why.
If you have been told elsewhere that you do not have enough bone, it is worth getting a second look at a scan before you rule implants out.
What the Dental Implant Process Looks Like Step by Step
Every case runs a little differently, but most follow the same path.
- Consultation and scan. We review your health history, examine your mouth and take a 3D scan. You leave with a plan.
- Preparation, if needed. A damaged tooth may need to come out first, and some patients need a bone graft or sinus lift before an implant is placed.
- Implant surgery. The titanium implant is placed in the jawbone. Our surgical placement page explains what that visit involves.
- Healing. The implant bonds with the bone over several months. This is the longest part of the process, and it is also the part where you mostly just get on with life.
- Abutment and crown. Once the implant is stable, we attach the abutment and fit your custom crown.
The total timeline depends on your bone, your health and whether any preparation is needed, so we give you a realistic picture at your consultation rather than a number.
Prefer a shorter path? Ask about same day implants. They are not right for every mouth, but some patients are suitable candidates.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?
Most healthy adults who are missing teeth can be considered. The things that matter most are healthy gums, enough jawbone and good oral hygiene.
Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and significant bone loss do not automatically rule you out, but they can affect healing, and they may mean extra steps first, such as a bone graft or treating gum disease. We would rather talk about that openly at the start than let it surprise you later.
If you are not sure whether implants suit you, a consultation is the quickest way to find out. Nobody has to commit to anything in that first visit.
Recovery and Aftercare: What the Weeks After Surgery Feel Like
Most people expect the recovery to be harder than it turns out to be. You will probably have some swelling and tenderness around the area for a few days, and we will give you written instructions on eating, cleaning and what to avoid while the site settles.
Soft foods help early on. Spicy or crunchy food can wait. We will also tell you what is normal and what is a reason to call us, so you are not guessing at 9 PM on a Sunday.
Once healing is done, an implant is cleaned much like a natural tooth. Brush twice a day, floss around it and keep up with your cleanings. Gum health around the implant matters as much as the implant itself, which is why regular checkups are part of the plan and not an extra.
Are There Risks With Dental Implants?
Like any surgery, implants carry some risk. Infection, slow healing or an implant that does not bond with the bone can happen, and they are more likely in people who smoke or have gum disease that has not been treated. Nerve or sinus irritation is uncommon, which is one reason careful planning with a 3D scan matters.
We talk through these risks before you decide, along with what we do to reduce them. If an implant is not the right choice for you, we will say so and suggest an alternative such as a bridge or a partial denture.
Why San Jose Patients Choose Fremont Star Dental
People look past the closest office for different reasons. Some want an experienced dentist for a bigger treatment. Some want a plan that includes the scan, the surgery and the crown with one team. Others have been told elsewhere that their case is complicated and want a second opinion.
Dr. Patel is a member of the American Dental Association and the California Dental Association, and our patients have recognized the practice as an Opencare Patient's Choice Winner. Our approach is simple: explain every option clearly, never rush a decision and make sure you understand the plan before treatment begins.
Dental Implant Cost, Insurance and Financing for San Jose Patients
Cost is usually the first question, and the honest answer is that it depends on your case. The number of missing teeth, the type of replacement and any preparation such as an extraction or bone graft all change the total. We go through the specifics with you after your scan, and our dental implant cost page explains what drives the price.
On the insurance side, we are in network with many PPO plans, including Aetna, Anthem, Delta Dental, Cigna, Guardian, MetLife, Principal, UnitedHealthcare and Blue Cross Blue Shield. Implant coverage varies a lot from plan to plan, so we check your benefits before treatment and tell you what to expect. You can see the PPO plans we accept in one place.
If you do not have insurance, you are still welcome. Patients without coverage can ask us about discounts. And we work with CareCredit, which offers 0% interest payment plans for eligible treatment, so a larger plan can be spread into monthly payments.
Is the Drive From San Jose to Fremont Worth It for Dental Implants?
That is a fair question, and only you can answer it. What we can do is make the trip as easy as possible.
Our office is at 5021 Mowry Ave in Fremont, at the Mowry Ave and Blacow Rd crossing. It is reachable from both the 880 and the 680, next to Big Apple Subway and Great Clips, so it is easy to find.
Hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Friday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Saturday visits from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM are by appointment, so call us on a weekday to book one. We are closed on Wednesday and Sunday.
Because the planning, surgery and crown all happen with the same team, some of your visits may be short check ins and not full appointments, so you can plan them around your work week. When you call, tell us where you are coming from and we will line visits up sensibly.
Dental Implants or Dentures: Which Is Right for You?
Dentures cost less up front and do not need surgery, which is a real advantage for some people. Implants cost more, but they stay fixed, help preserve the jawbone and let you chew without worrying about slipping.
Neither is wrong. It depends on your budget, your health and what bothers you most about missing teeth. Our guide on dental implants vs dentures lays out the differences, and Dr. Patel can help you weigh them in person.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants for San Jose Patients
Do you see patients from San Jose for dental implants?
Yes. Our office is in Fremont, and patients are welcome from San Jose and the surrounding area. Call (510) 797 4900 and tell us where you are coming from so we can schedule visits that work for you.
Are dental implants painful?
The surgery is done with local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Afterward it is normal to have some soreness and swelling for a few days, which most patients manage with the care instructions we give you. If anything feels worse than expected, call us.
How long does the dental implant process take?
It usually takes several months from the first scan to the final crown, mainly because the implant needs time to bond with your bone. Preparation such as an extraction, bone graft or sinus lift can add to that. We map out your timeline at your consultation.
How long do dental implants last?
With good home care and regular checkups, implants can last many years, and often a very long time. The crown on top may need replacing sooner than the implant itself because it takes the daily wear from chewing.
Does insurance cover dental implants?
Coverage depends on your plan, and many plans cover only part of the treatment, such as the crown or the extraction. We check your benefits before treatment and explain what to expect. If you pay on your own, ask about discounts and CareCredit 0% interest plans for eligible patients.
What happens at the first implant consultation?
We talk through your history, examine your teeth and gums and take a 3D scan. Dr. Patel then explains whether you are a candidate, which option suits you and whether any preparation is needed. You leave with a clear plan and no pressure to decide that day.
